Young African American Women's Conference (YAAWC) 2008
THE 6TH ANNUAL YOUNG AFRICAN AMERICAN WOMEN'S CONFERENCE
Change, Challenge, and Choice
The Pasadena Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. and its partners, which include Pasadena City College, the City of Pasadena Commission on the Status of Women, Pasadena Unified School District, Women at Work, Metropolitan Community Action Services Corporation, and HBCU Campus Tours, will host the Sixth Annual Young African American Women's Conference on Saturday, March 29, 2008, from 8:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at Pasadena City College.
The full-day innovative and interactive conference is designed to inspire, motivate, and increase African American girls' (12 to 18 years of age) awareness of the changes and challenges they will encounter on their journey through life, and the choices they might make to ensure their future success and well-being. Workshop topics will range from how to start a business and dressing for success to graduating from high school and getting into college. In addition, conference attendees will learn about various career paths.
Amy Petersen, also known as Dena Cali, as in Pasadena, California, will serve as the keynote speaker for the conference. Ms. Cali is a versatile entrepreneur who has managed to capitalize on her wealth of knowledge and experience within the beauty, fashion, and entertainment industries. Chimene Davis and Bonnie Rutherford, two accomplished producers, will serve as the closing speakers. They will present their feature length documentary film, Origin of Rainbows: Colorism Exposed, and will lead an interactive discussion following the viewing.
Delta Sigma Theta's goal is to engage 300 girls in and around the Pasadena/Altadena area in the conference. The registration fee is $5, which includes breakfast and lunch as well as a host of exhibits, speakers, and workshops. For more information regarding the conference, please visit www.yaawc.org.
