What a distressing contrast there is between the radiant intelligence of the child and the feeble mentality of the average adult. - Sigmund Freud

I absolutely love this quote
Don't say you don't have enough time. You have exactly the same number of hours per day that were given to Helen Keller, Pasteur, Michelangelo, Mother Teresa, Leonardo da Vinci, Thomas Jefferson, and Albert Einstein.

Japanese Lessons
I've actually gotten a few 100% on my Hiragana quizzes. That means it is sticking! For me it isn't just about the grade it is the fact that I don't want to just learn to pass a test but learn for life.

VOYA Cover Photo Contest for Teens
I found this while web surfing today and wanted to share for those who may have interested young adults in their family.
VOYA's Cover Photo Contest for Teens:
TEENS ON THE PLANET READ
Teen photographers' own creations appear on the front cover of Voice of Youth Advocates (VOYA) magazine. On the theme of "Teens on the Planet Read," VOYA wants photographs that express the relationship between teens and the world of reading. Images should portray teens with any type of reading material: books, magazines, comics, computers, their own creative writing, media of any kind—even participating in library programs or other events. Pictures might be taken in teens' bedrooms, libraries, classrooms, or outdoors—anywhere on the Planet Read.
Photographs taken by teens must be submitted through a librarian, teacher, or other adult sponsor, and are accepted throughout the year. The contest is ongoing.
Submission Guidelines
- Standard 4x6-inch or larger color prints are preferred. High-resolution digital photos of at least 300 dpi are accepted if sent as tif or jpg files. Low-resolution digitals cannot be considered.
- All photos must be marked clearly with the name of the photographer and a suggested photo title or caption. For prints, use a sticky note on the back of the photo. For digitals, place the information in an e-mail to screel@voya.com.
- A cover sheet or e-mail must accompany all submissions, containing the teen photographer's name, age, e-mail, street address, city, state, zip code, and phone number; along with the adult sponsor's name, title, library/school/organization, street address, city, state, zip code, phone, and e-mail.
- Tips for Winning Photos: Avoid amateur snapshots. Photos must be well composed, well focused, and capable of sharp reproduction when enlarged. Seasonal themes, humor, and unusual poses catch the editor's attention. Award-winning photos from a local library or school photography contest are welcomed.
- Mail photo prints to:
VOYA Cover Photo Contest
4501 Forbes Blvd., Suite 200
Lanham, MD 20706
E-mail digital photos to screel@voya.com.
Teen photographers whose pictures are published will receive a $50 prize and three copies of the magazine.

Homeschool Tournament Results
Not sure how I ended up at the Log Cabin Democrat website but this was a nice story to read, so I thought I would share. I've always found stories I like in the smaller papers:
Lady Falcons win homeschool basketball national tourney
OKLAHOMA CITY The Faulkner County Homeschool Lady Falcons defeated the Houston Wolverines 67-52 Friday to win the 16-under 5A national title in the National Homeschool Basketball Tounament here.
Maura Ferrell led the Lady Falcons with 18 points. Haley Bolieau, Libby Quattlebaum and Jennifer Passmore all scored in double digits with 17, 16, and 12 points, respectively. Lexi Dather finished out the scoring with four points.
Bolieau, Dather, Ferrell and Quattlebaum were named to the all-tournament team. Sharon Parks was awarded the Christian Character Award.

Family Square Dance - Sunnyvale
This came through on one of the homeschooling lists I'm a part of. I only wish I lived near Sunnyvale. I really think it will be a lot of fun. If you are a homeschooler who can reasonably make it. Please try. It is a better alternative, than sitting around wishing for activities. Support the ones that are out there.
Want to try a fun, family-oriented activity with a bunch of fellow homeschoolers without any dependence on the weather? This is not your grandpa's square dance. We dance to a variety of high-energy music and kick up our heels and have some fun.
I hope you will join us for this upcoming square dance to be held:
Tuesday, March 4th, 6:30-8:00pm
Cupertino Middle School
1650 S. Bernardo Ave.
Sunnyvale
At the door pricing: only $4 per person (up to $16 max per family)
Contact ruth@familysquaredance.org for more information. Please feel free to forward this information to other homeschoolers as well.

Oregon Trails II
I've finally finished my second travels and - I think my score was lower than the first. Even though I traveled as a doctor, I suffered 2 deaths from cholera. Out of the 3 that made it to the end 2 were in good shape and 1 was in fair,.
I admit as a parent I didn't read a lot of the guide. Another lesson to pass down. I must ask when it comes to "games" do you ever assume you know what to do?
My final score was 3,466 which didn't even rank in the Top Score listing. Oh well. I am going to read the instructions and
